Homo-Sexual men and Bestiality from a scientific perspective. By: Mike Olah.

Please note:
scientist are still researching this area and so anything that
might be "true" today might latter be proven wrong by subsequent studies.

First off, it's the consensus of the scientific community that homosexuality
is a genetic disorder, although this doesn't mean that it's causes are any more
understood or that they've proved this in any way. It should also be mentioned
that the grouping of homosexual men, homosexual women, bisexuals, and transgender
into the greater gay community may be an overgeneralization. In truth, we
could be lumping these markedly different conditions into a larger group
just for easier social categorization. In other words, although all these
lifestyles may seem similar to us, in truth they could be the results of totally different causes.
Here's what scientist know for sure, so far...

They know that for male homosexuals having older brother increases your chances of being
homosexual (called the fraternal birth order effect).
Having older brothers may increase your chances of being homosexual by three to five percent.
The studies have also shown that its not the social effects of having older brothers,
since the ratio still holds even when they weren't raised together.
The most likely cause for this is a prenatal change caused by the mother.
Scientist believe that after having a certain number of males, it is evolutionarily
unfavorable to waste anymore energy on them (think about it, you only need one male
for every ten or so females to reproduce. Our ratio of 1:1 is biologically absurd).
So after a mother already has a few sons, it would be more favorable to have females
(although don't be confused and think homosexuality is a failed attempt at turning males into females.
The argument I posted on FA about social stability provided by homosexuality is more
likely the reason why the mother is more likely to make her later sons gay.)
Scientist believe that after the first few male children, the mother's boy learns to
identify other males, maybe through an immune system detection agent.
They then believe that the mother floods the new male fetus with an excess of androgen
(a male sex hormone like testosterone).
They don't yet know how this excess male hormone induces later homosexuality,
but it holds true for all homosexuals.
One visible effect that excess androgen has is on the finger length ratios on the right hand.
For men, the ring finger on the right hand should be longer than the pointer finger;
for straight women, they should be about equal.
In homosexual women, they have ratio closer to those of men, indicating excess prenatal
androgen; men too, whether gay or straight, show a greater ratio between these two fingers
if they had older brothers.
Additionally, homosexual women show auditory system characteristics closer to that of men.
Homosexual men also have a greater mean number of lifetime sexual partners, more circulating androgen,
and larger penises than straight males.
They've also shown that homosexual sheep have biological differences in the brain associated
with sexual preference when compared to straight sheep, although this can't be applied
directly to human homosexuality just yet.

So to summarize, it looks as if homosexuality is one side-effect caused by prenatal conditions
possibly influenced by older male siblings and random maternal causes.
This very well could be cause by a gene or genes in either the homosexual or even the mother or older brothers.
We have to be careful though. Homosexuality could very well be a symptom of a greater condition, and
might not be expressed in every one who has it (think of it as a muscle aches with the flu, not very
body will get them, but muscle aches certainly are caused by the flu).
Additionally, human sexuality is much more complex than that of animals, and also appears to exist
on a continuum (no ones just straight or gay, they most likely exist somewhere in between).
So we must also take into account the effects of consciousness and other mental conditions
(although don't you dare believe any of that Freudian crap, he made it all up and none of it has ever been proven.
All studies show that homosexuality is caused very early in life, before birth, so it wasn't a parent or
other gay person that caused it in you. Instead what I'm saying here it that if you're bisexual, you might
be able to hide your homosexual desires even from yourself. Basically because we humans can think, our
sexual desires aren't as clear as those of animals, but the biological causes of our sexuality are there no matter what).

As for sexual desires being direct at things like animals or animated characters, this isn't as odd as you may think.
Even though our brains are amazingly complex, they're also incredibly stupid sometimes.
Our brains are programmed to do simple repetitive task, and the more simple the process,
the better. This is seen in facial recognition. Your brain has an entire center devoted to just
recognizing human faces. Whenever you look at a person this area lights up, making it easier for you
to recognize friends and possibly enemies. But this area also lights up when you look at gorillas' faces, or dogs',
or even shapes in the clouds.
In the same way your brain has an area devoted to sexual desire.
So whenever you look at a naked person (of the sex you prefer) it gets you sexually excited.
But this too is very primitive, so similar stimuli like an animated cartoon can trigger this area too.
In fact, scientist have observed sexual desire expressed by turkeys toward wooden sticks with two
female feathers attached to them. But once again, we can't just attribute sexual desire to a simple over
generalization of the brain. In truth there are probably many things like history and personality that
effect your desires, but then again, those are both products of the brain too.
We also just can't say that homosexuality is genetic because DNA isn't as significant as you might think.
First off, genes aren't very well defined on the genome. Think of genes as sentences and DNA as this whole email;
instead of reading genes like we read words, the body picks and chooses words from different places,
making an almost limitless number of combinations.
Additionally, scientist used to think that DNA was the most important and RNA was just a messenger,
but now they understand that DNA is actually ruled by RNA. Also, DNA needs a controller to know when to turn
on certain genes (because think about it, all your cells have the same DNA, so how do brain cells know how to
turn on the right genes and not produce liver proteins.) This is controlled by what is known as the epigenome.
The epigenome are little chemicals that stick off the DNA and tell your body how to work its genes.
These chemicals can be greatly influenced by everything from hormones to your diet (this is why green tea is good for you.
It has chemicals that help maintain your epigonome and stop cancer).
These chemicals can also be passed down from parents, so in theory, what your grandma ate could
effect how your genes are expressed now. So while we can guess that homosexuality is probably influence by DNA,
we're no where close to fully understanding the process.
So in your case, you were probably made homosexual while you were still developing in the womb.
If you have older brothers, they probably increased your chances, but they in no way directly
caused your sexual preference. Your mother probably also helped cause your homosexuality by giving you
extra androgen before birth, but she had no control over this.
Your father was probably not involved at all, but as I said, we don't know if it's genetic or not,
so truthfully either parent could have passed down the gene or genes (even though you don't have relatives
that are gay, people can still have genes that they don't express, and random genetic errors do sometimes
perfectly mimic certain genes. After all, its random errors of DNA that created all your genes in the first place).
You were not made homosexual by anything that happened to you in your childhood or life.
Sexual attraction doesn't appear until puberty, so it's perfectly natural that you had straight crushes
while you were little (I did too). The reason you didn't notice a strong sexual desire until just
recently was probably a mental block. We really don't know how the mind works, so I can't tell you
how you block these desires, but the studies show that homosexuality it a biological difference in the brain,
so it has probably always been there. I think you already knew that homosexuality was caused at birth and
unchangeable, but at least now you have a scientific backing to that claim.
I really liked your comparison of homosexuality to left handedness, but I think a better analogy would be to dyslexia.
Both are believed to be genetic, both are marked by physical differences in the brain, both carry a negative
stigma and are the subject of prejudice. The reason I like your analogy is that, unlike dyslexia,
homosexuality isn't a problem that needs fixed. In fact, it may even be beneficial (slows our population growth,
encourages adoption, and is socially pacifying, see my FA post). I think the way your article approaches the
social side of homosexuality is great and I believe it gives a good reason why homosexuality should be accepted.
And hopefully after knowing this scientific background behind the issue, you'll be able to defend that position even better.
